PennLive from Central Pennsylvania decided to open a poll for their readers. They asked two simple questions. The poll is by no means scientific, but that doesn’t mean that it should be disregarded either. The first question was on driving in the Commonwealth. “Would a $15 fee for a drivers’ test be OK with you?” The majority replying stated yes. While that’s not extremely surprising since residents don’t need to take a drivers’ test on a regular basis, it could be interpreted as an opening for legislators that have been salivating over the concept of increasing vehicle registration fees. The flawed logic would be that if Pennsylvanians are alright with increasing one fee involved in legally driving in the Commonwealth, they’d probably be fine with increasing other fees.

While I can’t begin to understand why PennLive chose their second question, perhaps I inadvertantly stumbled on their logic. The other question, “Would you support downsizing the state House?” offers an important warning sign for Pennsylvania legislators. In the eyes of their constituents, they are expendable. There has been talk occasionally over the years about cutting back on the number of legislators in Harrisburg, and given the current economic climate, it could turn into more than just talk.

Ballot Boxes - Anthony Karanja (CC)

The Legislative branch must vote for such a thing, but the knee-jerk reaction that they would never vote themselves out of a job might be premature. With just two-year terms, members of the Pennsylvania House spend close to half their time in office trying to stay in office. If there was an effective grassroots movement started demanding that the House downsize, the members may have no real choice. Either vote to downsize and possibly lose one’s seat, or vote against it and face being voted out anyway. It is a huge “what if” situation, but given the apparent attitude of voters (at least amongst PennLive readers), it’s not out of the question.

Article first published as Obama to Assad: It’s Time to Move On on Technorati.

President Obama issued a statement that it is time for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad to step aside, and allow the Syrian people to move forward without him. Beyond stating his disapproval of the treatment of the Syrian citizens, and his solidarity with their cause, Obama also stated that he has issued an Executive Order forbidding any form of commerce with the Assad regime. This includes halting all petroleum and petroleum product purchases from Syria by the U.S. and its citizens. While acknowledging that it will be a rough road ahead for Syrian protesters, U.S. officials are of the belief that the days of the Assad regime are numbered.

Since Obama has put an end to petroleum trade between the U.S. and Syria, at least one petition has been started asking that the European Union nations do the same. While there is some concern that Obama’s actions now are simply a precursor to another war in the region, there is also the possibility that eventually economic sanctions will be enough to stop the Assad regime in its tracks.

But the reality on the ground for Syrians is pure chaos and fear. The video above is of protesters that had been arrested, and placed on a bus for transport to a detention facility. “With blood Soul sacrifice for Bashar,” and “Allah, Syria, and Bashar only,” are the chants that the soldiers are forcing their prisoners to say. Given the previous reports of severe abuse of prisoners by the Assad regime, the beatings that these people are receiving are only the beginning of what they will endure. Sadly, one could consider these people the lucky ones, since apparently the Assad regime has adopted a “shoot on sight” policy when it comes to protesters. At least the people on the bus have a chance of living, if they survive their incarceration. Seeing the protesters on that bus serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of attempting to remove Assad from leadership – something that gets lost too easily in the debates over what the rest of the world should do.

The video went viral overnight on Twitter thanks to users like @AmericanSyrians. That account represents a group of Americans that support the Syrians by offering the public information on the conflict in Syria from an American perspective. Grassroots support in the U.S. for Syrian citizens can also be found at the Syrian Coordination Committee (SCC.) The SCC unites ten existing Syrian American organizations for the purpose of supporting Syrian citizens in their struggle against the Assad regime.

It’s sad, really it is. Herman Cain is a “plant” to make people think Republicans aren’t racist. At least that’s what the supremely gifted political pundit, Janeane Garofalo thinks. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fact that Cain is actually an evil capitalist that worked hard to build his business empire, and is generally annoyed with the direction our government has been going. He couldn’t want to foster new businesses in this country, by running for public office and promoting his way of life – you know, the whole work for what you get, and not rely on the government to give you what you need or want. Could Garofalo have reached her opinion of Cain because she simply can’t believe that a black man would believe in capitalism, and working for a living? Wouldn’t that in itself be a racist concept?

And maybe Garofalo is going after the wrong black man. To hear Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) tell it, the black man that is losing touch with the needs of the black community isn’t Herman Cain – it’s President Barack Obama. But even if the headlines say Obama is after the votes of whites, it’s unlikely anyone’s going to call him or his party racist.

Article first published as Obama: An American President on Technorati.

Aaron Sorkin got it right, back in the mid-nineties. The quote from The American President (1995), “…I was so busy keeping my job that I forgot to do my job,” is an accurate statement about Obama today. Hollywood presidents are always bigger than life, but occasionally they reflect the reality of the situation. Unfortunately, that is the case right now, but instead of seeing the real President step up and take control like in the movie, we’re obviously heading into an early re-election campaign.

First, one must consider who is doing the talking now on behalf of Obama. Robert Gibbs is now an adviser for Obama’s re-election campaign. He is no longer working for the administration. Why he was the one chosen to deliver the message that the President is not primarily concerned with getting re-elected is difficult to comprehend. Gibbs’ job description no longer includes speaking on behalf of the President – he speaks on behalf of the Presidential candidate seeking re-election.

Second, there is the message itself. Suggesting that Congress focus on creating jobs is an inappropriate comment. Congress does not create jobs – at least not jobs that would actually improve the economy. Yes, Congress can create new jobs within the government, but that is merely shifting the money around. Instead of paying unemployment, it is paying wages. It decreases the number of people that are unemployed, but does nothing to decrease the debt – quite the opposite.

Third, beyond the quick mention of the payroll tax relief remaining intact, there is nothing substantial coming from the Administration or Obama’s re-election campaign staff about concrete changes to improve the economy. There have been many accusations made about this president being an ideologue, and unable to admit that what he has attempted so far simply isn’t working. Accusations that the Administration wants to continue on the same course of throwing money at the problem have gone unanswered in any meaningful way. Government spending should be viewed as an addictive action. “Insanity is repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results” – a variant of another well-known quotation on insanity is attributed to Narcotics Anonymous. Appropriate to see that organization pointing out the problem we are facing now when it comes to the “Beltway opiate.”

But the unfortunate fact is that the vast majority of Americans may very well forget this little message from Gibbs, the re-election campaign consultant. Worse, they may miss the irony. Washington was rife with double-speak and non-committal replies to important questions before this Administration, and will undoubtedly remain so. However, perhaps the historians of the future will pick up on the fact that this practice has been raised to an art form by Obama – beyond his utter failure to lead because it got in the way of his re-election campaign, he may go down in history as the master of the fine art of meaningless political oration.

Would love to say it’s a joke, but there’s actually a real church involved.
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster likes pirates, and beer. Every Friday is a holiday, and members embrace contradictions. Now that’s some religion! Of course, I’m wondering what their stand is on eating pasta. It wasn’t mentioned on their cute little “About” page. Maybe it’s fine, or maybe it’s considered sacrilegious – you know, the whole “you’re eating our deity” thing. But here’s to the Pastafarians! It’s Friday! Let’s have some beer! (For those of you that are actually from Western Pennsylvania, by all means look for Full Pint Brewing products! The only beer “endorsed” by the owner of this blog.)

They’re just so cute when they think they have it all figured out. They think that spending cuts hurt job creation – even now after the debt-ceiling crisis that they created. (You know, the whole not passing the increase last year, so the evil and mean Republicans could buy into the blame for our excessive debt.)

sagriffin305 (CC)

You see, there’s this neat little financial indicator called a credit rating. Consumers have one, and if it’s not good, they can’t do nice things like get credit cards to make purchases, or get loans or mortgages for large purchases like cars and homes. Right now, the U.S. is still teetering on the edge of losing its sterling credit rating. Since ratings giants like Standard & Poor’s can’t presume to suggest that the U.S. make cuts in defense spending, they have centered their concern on entitlement spending.

And there it is – the evil Republicans saying that we need to cut back on paying for entitlement programs. Every dollar spent on government employees cuts into the amount of money businesses have to spend on what? Oh yeah, job creation. If we hire more people to work in the government, we increase the need for revenue, increase the probability that we will have to radically increase taxes, decrease funds available for private enterprises to employ workers, and stifle economic growth. And this is not about the top 10% of this country. It is about Main Street. It is about small business owners that are not expanding because they don’t want to get caught with their pants down later. They are not expanding business unless they have capital on hand to do it. Why? Because they are nervous about what those new employees will cost them down the road – thank you Democrats for Obamacare, and the next big entitlement program that S&P is eyeing cautiously as a potential radical increase in U.S. governmental spending. Small business owners also aren’t running out to borrow money because it is a bankers’ market right now. And large investors aren’t playing the market in a way that will help the situation either. If the state of the New York Stock Exchange isn’t a big enough indicator for you, how about taking a look at BNY Mellon deciding to charge fees for stowing away large sums of cash for investors.

This isn’t about “trickle down economics” anymore. It is about the entire financial and business structure of the U.S. sitting in a holding pattern out of fear. And they’re right to be afraid. Comparing the U.S. to Norway is cute, really it is. But it simply doesn’t work. Start with the size of the two nations being far too different, follow through to where each nation stands in the international market, and finish off with the fact that Norway has been taxing the hell out of its citizens for decades. If the U.S. attempted to switch to a similar tax structure at this point to pay for the government entitlement programs liberals want so badly, forget about this being a recession – single or double-dip. It will throw us into a depression that will make the Great Depression look like a little blip on the financial scale. Business would not improve, let alone thrive. It would literally plummet, then flat-line. Business pulls nations out of recessions, not government. Businesses create jobs, not politicians, period.

I am happily married. My husband is a graduate from WVU with a degree in Political Science, is conservative, and therefore has a clue when I end up flying off on a tirade about whatever happens to annoy me in the world of politics. He’s probably not as well-versed on the Middle East as I am, but for the time being, he holds his own. He’s also a Christian, and a leader in his church. Occasionally he gives me the evil eye for staying in bed when he’s getting ready to take our son to church, and occasionally I break down and join him. My “church” is watching the Sunday morning political programs while browsing the opinion pages of our Sunday paper. I’m regularly accused of being “liberal” at worst, or a RINO at best because I don’t go lock-step with social conservatives when it comes to issues of morality. My answer has been, and always will be, it is not my job to police the moral lives of others, and it definitely isn’t the job of government. My husband, my dog, my cat, and occasionally our son are the only ones welcome in my bed, thank you very much. I regularly toss out the canine, feline, and child, and would never allow Uncle Sam there in the first place.

Sarah Ackerman (CC)

But the National Organization for Marriage and many social conservatives including Mitt Romney would just love to invite that old man into all of our bedrooms. Why? I can only assume that all of these people think that good and decent people in this country need the government to protect the sanctity of marriage because they can’t do it for themselves. They need governmental intervention to proselytize, and defend their religious beliefs about marriage from evil heathens like me. You see, I am wrong, because I don’t want anything to do with invading the privacy of my neighbors, and telling them what to do with the most intimate parts of their lives. I don’t need to control the actions of others to protect the sanctity of my own marriage, so I must be going straight to hell. (I’d be a little worried, if I actually believed in any of that stuff.) And most of all, because I don’t believe in a Judeo-Christian deity (or any deity at all for that matter), I must be marked as an evil individual determined to put an end to Christianity as we know it. (That’s why I get into screaming matches with my husband every week for taking our son to church – oh, I forgot, I don’t do that!)

With all of the pledges going around, I started thinking, maybe there should be yet another one. Call it the “Promise to Prioritize”. It goes like this:

We the undersigned promise to not cater to religious organizations playing in politics, regardless of whether or not we happen to agree with them, before managing a few important problems our nation faces. We will engage in meaningful debate about social conservative ideals after our nation has managed to overcome our debt problem, high unemployment rate, and our dependence on natural resources from foreign nations. Defending moral principles through legislative action will be our top priority once we have enacted common sense reforms to the healthcare reform law, or have rescinded it entirely and successfully passed a truly affordable plan for our country. We will address the concerns of faith-based organizations seeking to legislate their principles once we have extricated our nation from all military actions abroad, with the exception of maintaining a peaceful presence on foreign soil. Once these issues of great importance have been addressed, we will faithfully toil to settle once and for all the true meaning of the separation of church and state, and use as our guiding principle the words of one of our Founders, Thomas Jefferson – “It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God.”

We have far more important things to worry about than who is sleeping with whom and who wishes to be considered married. If your marriage loses value because of another couple, the problem isn’t that other couple – it is you. If you need the state to defend your belief system, it is not the fault of those that have different beliefs than you do. You are the problem, and your lack of faith is the problem. If one is a true believer in any religion, the actions of others that do not share that belief system are meaningless. Forcing one’s beliefs on the world at large is precisely what followers of Islam are accused of doing, especially when it involves acts of terrorism. Demanding legislative action in the name of one’s faith in this country is its own kind of terrorism – it is demanding that the beliefs of others be marginalized, and that those people do not deserve freedom. It is patently un-American. This country was started as a haven from persecution for people that wished to follow a religion that was despised in their homeland. We don’t need to come full circle, and become the ones that persecute, do we?

In America pride is a funny thing but apparently it is only open to certain groups of people. If you want to be loud and proud you can be as long as your not loud, proud, and white. There are many groups focused around pride whether its for their sexuality or their skin color. A perfect place to find these pride groups are on many of the popular social networking websites. The one I have in mind currently is the ever so popular Facebook. While I am a member of this social network and many of my readers are as well, I do enjoy the site. However after a recent incident I am enjoying it a little less. Up until recently I have had little issue with Facebook and I currently am not having any problems with them unlike a friend of mine that is. He is a proud white man and at times he is overly proud. If you ask him if he is racist 9 times out of 10 he will answer no then follow it up with he hates everyone. While I don’t know if he hates everyone I know that he can find complaints about people of any color. So maybe in your mind he is racist but that is for you to decide. I can say he is a proud white man and there is nothing wrong with being a proud white man, is there? Apparently in some peoples eyes being a proud white automatically makes you a racist.

Hail Caeser! by DonkeyHotey (CC)

Here is what went down involving my friend. While he was bored one evening he started looking for pride groups on Facebook.com. He quickly noticed there were no groups for white pride, so he decided to start one. He named the group, “White Pride World Wide” and the first picture for the group he used had the same words. As he wrote the description of the group he made it very clear in the beginning that the group was not about racism but instead a place for proud whites to go. Within a few hours he changed to a new group picture to one that read, “Pride Not Hate.” Seems to me that he was attempting to make it known to everyone the group page was not a racist page. He talked on there about putting together a White Pride Day and even told a few people that if the event would happen he would ask everyone to wear white shirts. My friend formed the group on a Sunday night and on Tuesday morning is when the drama began. My friend attempted to log on to his Facebook account and he received a message saying his account had been disabled. Right away he knew why, all because he was proud. He set to work writing a nice and polite email to Facebook that explained his reasoning behind starting the page and also pointing out that there are many other pride groups on Facebook. In the meantime he had talked to a few friends including myself and explained what had happen and what steps he had taken so far. Then the slap to the face came, about 45 minutes after sending the email to Facebook, my friend received a text message from another friend telling him that his account on Facebook had been completely deleted. My friends existence came to a complete end in a blink of an eye, he no longer existed in the Facebook world. He received no warning, POOF! He was gone. My friend was mad of course over the whole issue but he had his laughs about it too. Some of his other friends later that day formed a bring George back to Facebook page. Well, no thanks to Facebook but George is back and he is trying to be good, for how long nobody knows.

This whole incident of course interested me. In the past I have written on the whole racism against white people. Depending who you ask you will get different answers as to does racism against white exist or is their discrimination against white people. While I for one believe there is discrimination and racism towards white people and this event involving my friend is just more proof. Like me, he too is a white male, he loves his country but doesn’t trust his government, he believes there are useless waste of life in every group of people no matter what their color is, he is proud of his German and Irish ancestry, and he is proud of being white. We always hear of famous Black Americans but when was the last time someone referred to George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, as famous White Americans? That’s right, you can’t. What did you learn in the public schools during white history month? Nothing, it does not exist, but every February we have black history month. So, with my friends issue still fresh in my mind I set out to do some research. I went onto our favorite social networking site, www.facebook.com and I began searching. My first search was for white pride, my search results 0. My next search was for black pride and the results returned over 50 groups. Search number 3 was for Latino Pride and no surprise it returned over 30 groups. Search number 4 yielded the largest number of returns over 100 and that was gay pride. Additional searches also showed smaller numbers of groups for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Pride. So Facebook is telling everyone that’s it is okay to have pride if you are anything but white. But wait wasn’t Facebook founded by a bunch of white guys? Well, thank you for asking that question. The answer is yes, it was founded by white guys. Today, Facebook stock is broken up to many different collectors. The largest stakeholder for Facebook is it employees, collecting 30%. I can’t tell you who makes up the employees of Facebook but I sure its safe to say a large mix of people from all backgrounds. Then comes Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg who alone collects 24% of Facebook’s income. Co-founder Dustin Moskovitz collects 6%, Co-founder Eduardo Saverin collects 5%, Napster’s Sean Parker, Founding President of Facebook: collects 4%, Digital Sky Technologies, a Russian investment firm collects 10%, Goldman Sachs collects 0.8%, Goldman Sachs’ clients collects 3%, Greylock Partners, a venture capital firm collects 1.5%, Meritech Capital Partners collects 1.5%, Peter Thiel, PayPal co-founder and Clarium Capital president collects 3%, Elevation Partners (that’s U2′s Bono among others) collects1.5%, and a few other investors collect a combined 9.7%. Since Mark Zuckerberg is the top man for Facebook and the top money maker, lets pick on him.

It is not know for sure whether Mark is Liberal or Conservative but we can look at some facts and you the reader can decide. I asked the question, is Mark Zuckerberg a Democrat or a Republican to the website www.answers.com and this is the answer I received. “The answer previous to mine that stated that Mark Zuckerberg is a republican is factually inaccurate, Mark Zuckerberg has stated himself that he is neither a Republican or Democrat, however he is from a Jewish family and is an atheist, both tend to lean to the left. He also graduated from Phillips-Exeter Academy, the finest high school in the country, and the same as two of Americans greatest Authors John Irving and Gore Vidal (both very liberal). He in addition attended Harvard (extremely liberal) and is seemingly anti-censorship, and very charitable. Through reasonable assumption I would guess he would be very liberal and unfaithful to either political party.” Well, that spells it out pretty good, I would have to agree, with that background I would say he leans to the left side of the fence. If it is true that he leans to the left side I think it would be safe to say this is the reasoning my friend got the boot from Facebook. My friend like me tends to lean more to the right. He calls a spade a spade and like me if he hurts someones feelings well it has been said that the truth hurts.

I want to make it clear, I am not supporting any type of racism. I too am a proud white male and I voice my opinion on any subject brought to my attention. Like many Americans we are proud of where we came from. I am proud that members of my family have served in every war since and including the Revolutionary War. When the southern states decided they no longer wanted to be controlled by a government of the North because they believed in states rights, my family proudly fought for the South. My family didn’t own slaves, they were farmers that worked their own land. They fought for the South not to preserve slavery but to preserve their own rights and their own property. One of the core Freedoms of being an American is our Freedom of Speech. However, this freedom has been limited and at times silenced by many politicians. Freedom of Speech only exist if you are in favor of liberal beliefs, when you speak against them they try to silence you. By making a White Pride group he was not being disrespectful to any other people, he was not threatening or bullying other people. He was simply showing his pride. Meanwhile, there are black pride groups on Facebook that use the clenched black fist that is recognized as black power symbol and is also associated with the Black Panthers. How can these groups exist? Facebook claims it does not take political sides. I disagree, how can you say you don’t take political sides when you allow symbols of black power and the racist corrupt organization symbol of the Black Panthers to continuously be used? If you are going to claim to be equal then be equal to everyone. If one single group can not have a pride group then nobody should be allowed to have a pride group. Pride and prejudice are two different things. Unless you are a white person then there is no difference. Whites face racism just as much as any other group in America today. Who is to blame for this? White people are passed over for jobs because of the governments Affirmative Action that promotes quotes or percentages of minorities in areas. I don’t care the skin color of the person doing should matter to the job as long as that person is the highest qualified and hardest working person for that position. Thanks to Affirmative Action your qualifications for a job take a backseat to your skin color. While in other writings I have stated how I feel the Church is the most corrupt organized crime family in the world, the United States Government is one of the largest and most racist groups in the world. It is the government that continues to force the race card on people. It is because of laws such as Affirmative Action that cause racism. When others stand up and speak of pride it is allowed and good but when a white person speaks up he is called a racist. The only white people that can publicly have open pride are those that are gay. Gay pride is okay because you are now considered a minority group. I have no problems with the gays either, what you do in your bedroom is none of my business. It all comes back to pride. Maybe we as white people are not suppose to be proud. We are not suppose to be proud that our country’s founding fathers were white men, that a white man was the first to walk on the moon, and that white men created the first airplane? Are we not suppose to be proud of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first white female doctor in the United States, Sally Ride the first female in space, should we not be proud of Betsy Ross the woman that created the first American Flag? Of course not, none of these people are important to American History why should we as white Americans be proud of what these great white people did to help form this country.

As long as there are groups out there to help protect the none white Americans, as long as the government continues to force white discrimination laws such as Affirmative Action, as long as the media and social networking sites continue to allow others to show their pride and call whites racist by trying to show their pride then racism will never end. So many people preach that we must end racism in America, well you can’t end something that the media and the government are forcing on to its viewers and citizens. Racism doesn’t end with me or you, it doesn’t end with laws such as Affirmative Action. Racism will end when the media and the government stop promoting it. Until then, we as white American must continue to hold our heads high and not let anyone put us down for being who we are, proud white Americans. We must support one another in our pride because we are all that we have. Support my friend as he makes his return to Facebook. By supporting my friend George you are telling him we as white Americans support him and we will send a message to Facebook letting them know that their liberal beliefs and actions will not hold us down. Pride is not racism, pride is being happy with who you are and where you came from.

Article first published as Atheists Go To Court To Prevent Cross at Ground Zero on Technorati.

I am an atheist, and I am a conservative. Yes, we do exist. Normally, I’m all for stopping the public display of religious items on public property, or at the very least, am for being inclusive in such displays. Ground Zero is a noted exception.

Ground Zero Cross (CC)

When I saw that atheists were going to a judge to order the removal of the Ground Zero cross, I parted ways with my “brethren.” While this cross has been made into an icon for Christians, in itself, it still holds a secular meaning that the atheists are claiming it does not. It is not unlike the nonsensical claims we see from time to time that someone has seen the face of Jesus in their toast. Beams in buildings are set like crosses. The fact that one was found intact, and placed for workers to see at Ground Zero probably did have some religious purpose. However, it was, and still is, a symbol of a small level of order amid the chaos. It is part of a building that happened to withstand the destruction, and stand on its own.

Ground Zero Cross (CC)

The religious significance of that is debatable. For people of faith, it has stood as a symbol of their beliefs. They chose to consecrate it, and show some degree of respect to it because of that action. But, how to interpret the meaning of this piece of metal – if it has any meaning at all – boils down to the beliefs of the individual. Christians may choose to view it as a symbol of their faith. Atheists may choose to view it as an aberration because it wasn’t destroyed on 9/11. Interpretations of what it means may run the gamut in between. But, the bottom line remains that it is still a piece of metal that happened to survive the destruction of the towers.

The atheists suggested a secular monument in its place, such as a fireman pulling a victim from the rubble. While that would be a nice addition to the memorial, it does not speak as clearly about what happened that day as that cross does. It is not just a symbol of a particular faith, no matter how much the faithful may wish it so. It is a symbol that became a driving force for the people that worked at Ground Zero, regardless of faith. That little piece of order helped them wade through the chaos. Christians manufactured a religious significance for this item, like they might with the burn pattern on a piece of toast. That does not lessen or render irrelevant any secular interpretation of that piece of steel. It is what it is, or whatever anyone makes of it. Requesting its removal, or the addition of something obviously secular is overkill. Atheists regularly call out the religious for attempting to use the state to protect their faith. Do atheists now need the government to protect their lack of faith?
