In America we have the First Amendment, the one that gives us our Freedom of Speech. While many people believe this is a great freedom to have and don’t get me wrong because it is, this freedom comes with many headaches and arguments. This comes to mind after the recent not guilty verdict handed down by a Florida jury in the case of Casey Anthony who was on trial for allegedly murdering her daughter. While I have to admit I really haven’t followed the case close because from the start I knew it would be a remake of the famous three ring circus trial of OJ Simpson in 1995. I was right, sadly. While the Casey trial had a lot of circumstantial evidence I am pretty sure most people believe she is guilty and will agree the prosecution did a terrible job. As the news broke of the not guilty verdict I seen many comments and heard many people say that she will pay in hell and God will make her pay. While I hope this is all true and God will make her pay it got me thinking about how God is such a difficult topic in America. We are always hearing how people are upset that their child was made to say The Pledge of Allegiance in schools and it offended them because of the words “under God” are in the pledge. What about our currency? Does it not say, “In God We Trust”? Does this offend them? If so maybe that should not use U.S. currency. Now, don’t get me wrong here. I am not a Bible beater here to preach to you. I am an American that knows and realizes that America was founded under the belief of God but we also wanted our citizens to have the right to freedom of religion. We wanted our citizens to have the right to choose their church, their choice of religion, and give them the choice of not having a God or a religion. Yes, I know those phrases have not always been used in the pledge or on money. However, they have been added over time and now it is an issue in the United States. Why is it an issue? Its an argument many times a day by people and its tying up our judicial system and costing our government money. Now when I was younger I did go to church and was semi active in the church, this is no longer true. While I still believe in God and I have read the Bible a few times, and I consider myself a christian I no longer go to church and I am not a big believer in the church. In fact, I look at the church as the largest organized crime family in the world. But this isn’t about the church; it’s about God in America.

Taken by Steven Depolo

Now I understand that many people may not believe in God or they may pray to a different God, but isn’t America for the people by the people? Well if so then I believe those people that believe in God or the christians are the majority. In fact, it is estimated that 83% of America is christian. Now I understand we should respect others beliefs but why do our beliefs have to suffer? This of course isn’t the first time the majority in America has made sacrifices to make the minorities happy. There are bigger issues facing America but yet this one keeps popping up. So, I’m going to have my say on the issue and give you a brief history lesson along the way.

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by a Baptist minister named Francis Bellamy. He viewed this pledge as an ‘inoculation’ that would protect immigrants and the native-born but insufficiently patriotic Americans from the ‘virus’ of radicalism and subversion. Bellamy’s pledge was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth’s Companion, a popular children’s magazine. The Youth’s Companion published the pledge as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day. The celebration was being held in honor of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. The original pledge went as follows;
I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Along the way a few changes were made to the pledge but it wasn’t until June 22, 1942 that the United States Congress officially recognized the Pledge of Allegiance as the official national pledge. This version of the Pledge went as follows;
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
In 1954 President Eisenhower, who was raised as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses but converted to Presbyterian in 1953, signed into law a Joint Resolution of Congress amending §7 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942. This new law added the words “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. Since 1954 our National Pledge has remained unchanged.

That is enough of the history lesson but there is more to the Pledge of Allegiance than what I have included here. Now I understand that not everyone want to say those two words. However, most of America does, remember about 83% of Americans are christians. So, if you don’t want to say those two words then here are some options for I recommend for you;
A. Say the pledge and just don’t say those two words.
B. Stand there in silence and be respectful while we pledge our allegiance.
C. Get the hell out of America if you are too ignorant to do options A or B.

Now, I was raised a Methodist. I had very little understanding or knowledge of the Catholic religion. Let me tell you my first experience with the Catholic religion was at a funeral. I was lost, confused and didn’t have any idea of what to do or when to do it. They would stand, kneel, sit, and speak as one to the priest. Instead of being rude and ignorant towards their religion and cause a fuss about not knowing what to do I just sat there quietly to myself. Nobody looked at me strange, nobody made fun of me, nobody questioned me. I was respectful to them and they were respectful to me and in the end nobody was upset. After the services had ended I even joked with a few of my Catholic friends about my confusion and they even found it amusing and told me that I did the right thing. The problem starts when people start forcing their beliefs on me then you can be damn sure I will get upset and share my opinion. Surprisingly, many people don’t agree with my opinion but through my writings I have found that many people do. Again, I have nothing agaist those that have different beliefs than me, just don’t force your beliefs on the majority that has a different belief than you. As stated before, I understand that America is about freedom, many freedoms but when did the majority become the minority? Our government and many of the people in America have become so worried about making others happy that the majority of people are getting stepped on.

I understand that there are Americans that do not believe in God or may even pray to a different God and that is your choice. I also understand that there are some conservatives that are trying to force christianity one everyone in America. I agree this is also wrong and once again the First Admendment protects us from this. Those that want to force their religious beliefs on anyone should be beaten with their Bible or whatever book they use in their religion. Everyone needs to realize that we have a freedom of religion in America but at the same time everyone needs to understand that christianity is what a majority of the people in America believe in. If an when the time comes that the majority of Americans are not christian then we should look at changing things until then lets leave it well enough alone. There are options there for those that do not wish to say the words “under God”. I will not fault you as long as your are respectful to those around you that wish to say it the way it is written. Everyone won’t be happy but we can compromise. Can’t we?

Now for those of you that follow me on Facebook I have taken advantage of the polls they have. I figured for the first time using the poll option on Facebook I would ask the following question; “Should the United States removes the words Under God from the Pledge of Allegiance? The following is a list of answers that were available to choose from; Hell No, No, Yes, and I Don’t Care. Now while I did receive an email brining to my attention that I am possibly leading people by having the two no answers. Well, maybe he is right. However, no matter how you look at it no is no whether it is Hell No or just plain no. As of the time of writing this article here is where the poll stands:
Hell No: 205 votes
No: 30 votes
Yes: 25 votes
I Don’t Care: 13 votes

While I understand Facebook is not a scientific poll, I am not a scientific person. However, I believe it still gets the point across. A few people even went as far as leaving comments and that is what I was truely hoping for. Now many of those that left comments were in favor of keeping those words and a few were against keeping them and a few didn’t care. There were also a few good points raised on all three sides, however my answer is, Hell No!

It is my belief that this country, our country was founded under God and the christian belief. I understand that many of the people that read my writings are from the South and are also Pro-Confederate. As am I and I wish the South would have won. I still wait for the day the South rises up and takes on the corrupt government in Washington D.C. I also believe that if states were to secede today, there would be more than the original 11 states. Until that day comes we are the United States of America. Both sides were very christian and still are today. While I love the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania my issue is with our government. However, its all comes back to the majority of Americans. There are compromises we can make on this issue. There are bigger issues facing America, there are more important issues facing America. We have a President in office that we need to get out, we have a deficit that we have to bring down, we are still fighting terrorism around the world working to make our homeland safer. Meanwhile, unemployment rates are still high, there are Americans starving and homeless and our education system is simply pathetic. How about we compromise on the Pledge of Allegiance. Until the other major issues facing America go away or when the majority of Americans are no longer christian we just leave it alone. You don’t have to say those two words or you can choose not to say the pledge at all just respect those of us that do. Also, for you Bible beaters that are annoying everyone and are trying to force christianity and God one everyone, you just need to STOP! Your preaching is doing anyone any good. America is the land of the free, this means we are free to choose our religion, so let us choose. We have a good thing with the Pledge of Allegiance, don’t ruin it for those of us that don’t want it changed. Again, its the majority, the majority of christians are not bible beaters preaching to the world. We are simple people that believe in God and we practice our christianity the way we feel best. Not the way the extremist do.

So, if the extreme Bible beaters shut up and stop forcing their beliefs on everyone and the non-christians can just understand that the majority of America is christian and they have options available everyone can be happy. In other words, can’t we all just get along and leave the damn thing alone?

A good friend brought this to my attention yesterday, and I just couldn’t let it go without some extended comments. This link to some coverage on a recent speech Newt Gingrich made caught my attention for about the same reason as it did my friend’s – the fact that it seems on its face to be a perfect oxymoron.
Since this was posted on Facebook, I took a moment and replied, stating essentially that I understood Gingrich’s logic in this speech. Secularists and atheists (yes, Virginia, there is a difference!) tend to marginalize the potential threat of Islam as an ideology or system of governance. Either it’s distaste for the loudest groups crying about this all of the time (Radical Christian Right), or it’s a matter of not taking any religion very seriously. Motives don’t really matter in this, since the bottom line is that if secularists and atheists ended up taking over this country entirely, they would be unlikely to worry very much about followers of Islam.

So, if they’re not worried about Islam, let alone considering the possibility of its followers attempting to take over the country, it’s unlikely they would do much to prevent it. Our country would be ripe for takeover by radical followers of Islam. And that is why (I hope) that Gingrich linked these three totally different groups together.

Now, if that wasn’t his train of thought…. well, I might be forced to overtly campaign against him regardless what he planned to do going forward on the grounds that he’s either mentally unstable, or just plain losing his ability to think clearly. I’m leaning toward the concept that either he was thinking as I’ve outlined above, or he was merely pandering to his audience. If it’s the latter, while I wouldn’t bother saying much against him, wouldn’t say much for him either!

There was a time when being what is now called a “social conservative” meant fighting to protect the rights of the people to live their lives following a moral code of their own choosing without governmental interference. It wasn’t about forcing anyone’s moral codes on anyone else – it was about protecting one’s right to privacy, and one’s ability to make choices on moral issues without interference from outsiders.

Now, it is largely ruled by a desire to promote Christian values as rule of law. As a result of this, there is a great deal of hatred and intolerance in the wind, particularly where homosexuals are concerned. Hatred and intolerance are not Christian values, period. Blaming the theoretically sinful behaviors of others for whatever is wrong in this world is bluntly insane. There is no divine message being delivered.

The death of Tyler Clementi was a tragedy. I am pleased to see so many people taking time out to offer their condolences and prayers to his family on Facebook. However, the following is certainly an indictment against those that choose to twist Christian values to their own devices.

In Honor of Tyler Clementi all comments that seek to harass his tormentors, his family, or his memory will be removed from this page; all hate speech or comments that fail to respect the grieving communities will be removed from this page. This page will only be published and open for comments on a random basis, as a way to limit the hate-speech, and cruel, vulgar abuse that has swarmed it…

The real Christian value is the fact that the people involved with the maintenance of that Facebook page have not only forbidden hate speech against Tyler or gays, but also posts against the ones that tormented the young gentleman.

After months (years?) of writing on politics, an occasionally on its intersection with religion, I’ve come to realize that while I’ve managed to write many, many words on why religion needs to stay on a parallel road with the political process, I’ve never specifically enumerated why. Over the past several weeks, religiosity in politics has reached a fevered pitch, and most disturbingly, proselytizing has been radically increasing. In response to the latest round of political purity tests involving religion, here’s the five reasons why religion needs to be taboo at the political dinner table. (Obligatory disclaimer: This is written about the “big three” major religions, in alphabetical order – Christianity (including Catholicism), Islam (not including Taliban, or other radical sects organized specifically for terrorist purposes), and Judaism. This is not about cults.)

1. – The business of politics is dirty. This is not news, and was used as an argument against granting women the vote – we didn’t need to be concerning ourselves with all that filth when there was filth enough at home to clean! But for whatever reason, people selectively forget this when they get it in their heads to argue political points from a religious perspective. They forget that religion is meant to be sacred – decidedly not dirty. Just think to yourself, every time someone brings God to the political table, they’re smearing mud on what should be pure.

2. – Religion is personal. Sure, it’s been said that politics is personal. It’s a nice saying, but outside of the wonderful world of political junkies, it’s generally inaccurate. Most people do not live and breathe politics. However, religion is invariably personal. Yes, there is a limited number of religions out there, but the way those religions are observed (or not) is limited only by the number of people on this planet. There is even diversity of faith within any given religious organization. Suggesting that political bodies govern based on any religious precepts is the greatest attack on religious freedom. Suggesting that political bodies protect the rights of the people to observe their personal belief systems as they choose is the true way to guarantee Freedom of Religion.

3. – Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as secular morality. Anticipating the inevitable argument that religion is the basis of many laws, atheists are not necessarily immoral. They are capable of recognizing that there is good and bad in this world, and that it is a good thing to avoid doing bad things. Humans are generally moral creatures by nature, and while useful in encouraging people to be well-behaved, they do not “need” the threat of retribution from a mystical force to keep themselves in line. Earthly punishments are typically enough to keep most in line, and the ones that don’t seem to be able to follow the rules wouldn’t anyway. There’s a reason why serial killers and career criminals are called aberrations.

4. – Like men, all religions were created equal. This one has gotten me into quite a few arguments over the years, primarily because I do not hide the fact that I distrust all religions equally. Every religion has skeletons in its closet. Every religion has caused men to act in a negative manner at some point in its history – some still do. They have all been the source of war and death at one point or another. And it doesn’t matter “when” in that history atrocities have occurred for the sake of a given faith. The fact that it did occur once (or more times) means that a similar situation could happen again.

5. – No religion is “right” – no religion is “wrong”. On the purely theoretical level, there is no way to prove which faith is right or wrong. That is the very nature of faith – believing in something without the benefit of proof. People following religions are the ones doing right and wrong, but qualitative statements for or against any given religion based on the actions of the followers are an exercise in stupidity as well. See number two here. No matter how organized a given religion may be, there is no way to absolutely control all of the followers, period. There will always be someone that takes things too far, and does things that are contrary to the precepts of a given faith, typically through misinterpretation of sacred texts. We call it “radicalism”. If these people were doing what the majority of a given faith believe is “right”, then we wouldn’t bother pointing out that they were on the fringe, now would we? And to keep things fair, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism all have radicals. I don’t typically come across ones from the last two, but I regularly get abuse from the first.

While I’ll concede that there’s probably at least a few people out there that honestly do question the religious beliefs of Obama at this point, I keep thinking that there’s far too much “deep analysis” of polls that suggest that a significant number of Americans think he is Muslim. It’s a fair assumption that just about every campaign strategist out there has said or at least thought that “politics is perception.” And for whatever reason, it seems that the media is forgetting that concept, or at least not considering it sincerely in the context of these polls.

From the beginning, there has never really been any argument over the fact that Obama’s father was Muslim, and that Obama himself had attended a Muslim school for a short period of time in his early childhood. Today, ABC posits that there is a definite prejudice against Muslims when it comes to voters considering candidates for public office. Yes, this is the land of the free, and yes, we’re generally more tolerant than most other nations, but it’s been under a decade since 9/11. Ground Zero remains under construction, and there’s a heated debate on what should be done with the real estate surrounding it. We’re still at war with Al Qaeda, and there is no honest end in sight. Comparisons with Pearl Harbor have been made many times, so here we go again. Would anyone honestly be screaming that we’re intolerant bastards if we were against voting in individuals of Japanese descent to high ranking offices in the years following that bombing, particularly if WWII had dragged out much longer than it did?

Now, that addresses the general distrust of Muslims in general, justified or not. It’s the truth, ugly as it may be. As for the perception of Obama, I’ve been thinking for some time now that it’s not so much about thinking that he is actually a Muslim, as it is a matter of not perceiving him as a Christian. We are still being bombarded with stories of potential terrorist attacks by radical Muslims, and spent the last several years being spoonfed the concept that any Muslim can end up being twisted into a dangerous radical. (Ironically enough, that theory is most often supported by radical Christians, but I digress, or not…) Religion has been politicized severely since 2001, and sadly, it has nurtured a climate where Christians seem to be increasingly of the opinion that if you’re not obviously with them, you’re against them. If you’re against them, more likely than not, you’re Muslim (assuming you’re not just one of those evil atheists.) Since Obama doesn’t wear his faith on his sleeve, he’s not obviously with the Christians, so he must be what? Oh yeah, Muslim. Rewind to the previously known information about his father and his childhood, and there’s the likely root of most of the current rash of incorrect perceptions.

Politics is perception, and when people are silly enough to ignore that First Amendment separation of religion and politics, the perception of public officials’ religious beliefs become relevant to their political careers. (Yes, I know I didn’t say “church and state”, so don’t bother yelping about it. My standard answer for that is that the framers saw the folly in mixing faith and politics, and chose terms that fit their times, and mollified the more religious amongst them. Politics is filthy. Religion doesn’t deserve to be made dirty by it.)

Some people that would do everything in their power to prevent this country from becoming a theocracy visited the White House today. Although the concept of religious organizations involving themselves in government has been an ongoing issue for this country from the very beginning, it became a larger concern during the last administration, particularly because of the official acceptance of faith-based initiatives (an issue that was meant to be addressed at the meeting today.)

Another issue that the Secular Coalition of America was meaning to address with the administration today is the closure of loopholes in federal law regarding medical neglect – a situation that allows parents that believe in faith-healing to maintain custody of children that need medical attention to live. This issue can be considered the flip-side of the abortion debate, in that it provides protections for parents that choose to deny medical treatments for their children on religious grounds – something that reveals hypocrisy from some members of the religious right.

Defining precisely where conservatives are supposed to stand was the point of the recent Mount Vernon Statement. The last principle of Constitutional conservatism in this statement lays the groundwork for misuse by the religious right – “It informs conservatism’s firm defense of family, neighborhood, community, and faith.” Defense of faith is a necessary part of our Constitution, as stated in the First Amendment. However, the bastardization of this tenet through attempts to legislate morality can by no means be considered protected by that amendment.

The primary problem is that after years of protecting religion from the state, we haven’t shifted gears to prevent the opposite. Wording of the First Amendment, stating the separation of “church and state”, hasn’t been translated to fit modern needs. The “church” that the framers were concerned with was the Church of England, and since that time, the only time concern over a specific denomination exerting control over our government was seriously considered was when Kennedy took office. Now, government does not need protected from a specific church, but from a specific group of churches – Judeo-Christian faiths.

What then is the relation of law to morality? Law cannot prescribe morality, it can prescribe only external actions and therefore it should prescribe only those actions whose mere fulfillment, from whatever motive, the state adjudges to be conducive to welfare. What actions are these? Obviously such actions as promote the physical and social conditions requisite for the expression and development of free—or moral—personality…. Law does not and cannot cover all the ground of morality. To turn all moral obligations into legal obligations would be to destroy morality. Happily it is impossible. No code of law can envisage the myriad changing situations that determine moral obligations. Moreover, there must be one legal code for all, but moral codes vary as much as the individual characters of which they are the expression. To legislate against the moral codes of one’s fellows is a very grave act, requiring for its justification the most indubitable and universally admitted of social gains, for it is to steal their moral codes, to suppress their characters.
ATTRIBUTION: R.M. MacIver (1882–1970), Scottish sociologist, educator. The Modern State, ch. 5, Oxford University Press (1926).

The previous is a long form of the statement “you can’t legislate morality.” That statement is often mentioned in the context of the abortion and marriage equality debates, as well as a myriad of other issues surrounding the intimate relationships of adults. Those seeking to create laws to prohibit their neighbors from engaging in the supposed “immoral” behaviors regularly assert that there is a majority of citizens in agreement with them, so therefore it is only right and just that a law should be created. However, that claimed majority pales when one considers McIver’s statement.

“To legislate against the moral codes of one’s fellows is a very grave act, requiring for its justification the most indubitable and universally admitted of social gains, for it is to steal their moral codes, to suppress their characters.” A majority of individuals that happen to end up on a list of willing participants in a survey, that is theoretically representative of the population as a whole could never be considered proof “most indubitable and universally admitted of social gains.” There is a group of countries that are attempting to legislate moral codes today – their “code” is called Sharia Law.

Drawing religious beliefs and codes into the political arena is dancing on the sword’s edge. On one side is the oppression of all citizens that do not share the belief systems of the majority, and on the other is the potential to destroy the value of the religious beliefs that the laws are being created to protect and promote. “To turn all moral obligations into legal obligations would be to destroy morality.” The value of morality and faith lies in the fact that it is a choice, not a legal obligation.

Consider this – the Shamans can be attributed with being the first politicians. Or did you know that theologians consider the story of Christ’s crucifixion true because it is such a difficult situation to fit into the belief system of the Jews at that time? Also, there is a distinct possibility that there is a genetic source for religious beliefs.

Robert Wright explores these ideas, and many others in his expansive work, The Evolution of God. Readers are provided with a multi-disciplinary text that reaps from anthropological, historical, and theological sources to create an all-encompassing study of the human race’s predisposition toward religion and deities.

The Evolution of God places religion in general – with a great deal of focus on the Abrahamic faiths – in context with their times. This may not be well received by individuals that follow a fundamentalist path in their faith. Pulling religious texts out of context is an unfortunate commonality in many faiths, so reading anything that places scriptures in their historical context may be difficult for some to handle.

Wright offers the opportunity to place faith and religions in general in a logical context based on recorded history. He also presents an interesting theory on the relationship between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. There was a time when all three coexisted, and probably interacted fairly well.

Robert Wright has offered an extremely valuable resource to anyone who has real desire to find out about the historical and anthropological roots of religious faith. The Evolution of God should be on the suggested reading list of every high school in America, and should be required reading in every college and university. It provides the context for religion that is rarely offered in any place of worship – something that is sorely needed, particularly today.
